Shanghai, October 16, 2025 — Researchers from East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) have published a significant review article in the prestigious journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition. The paper, titled Layered Double Hydroxides as Building Blocks for Precise Catalysis, summarizes recent advances in using Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) as versatile platforms for designing highly efficient and stable catalysts.

The review, authored by Professor Xuezhi Duan and Special Researcher Yueqiang Cao's team, highlights the unique advantages of LDHs, a class of two-dimensional layered materials. Their tunable composition, interchangeable interlayer anions, and ability to transform into various metal or metal oxide catalysts make them ideal for precision engineering of catalytic sites at the atomic level.

This atomic-level control is key to enhancing activity and selectivity in critical reactions such as electrocatalysis, selective hydrogenation, and syngas conversion. Furthermore, the inherent layered structure and strong metal-support interaction in LDH-derived catalysts significantly improve stability by preventing metal sintering.

The article also addresses current challenges, including the need to better understand structural evolution during reactions and to develop predictive models for catalyst design. Future research combining advanced characterization, theoretical simulation, and machine learning is expected to accelerate the development of high-performance LDH-based catalysts for sustainable energy conversion and green chemical synthesis.
