In this lecture we will explore the grand challenges to achieve carbon neutrality in the production of electricity, transportation fuels and chemicals. It will be shown that C1-chemistry via production and conversion of synthesis gas (H2/CO) will play a vital role for the chemical industry to achieve this goal. Both the selection of feedstock (coal, natural gas, biomass, municipal waste)to produce synthesis gas and the catalytic conversion thereof will be discussed.
