A student team from East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) has once again secured the highest honor—the National Special Prize—at the 19th National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Design Competition finals held at Tianjin University on August 17, 2025.

The team, composed of five undergraduate students, also earned two individual awards for Excellent On-site Defense and Excellent Engineering Drawing. Their winning project involved designing a clean production process for dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) that utilizes hydrogen sulfide from waste gas, aligning with green and low-carbon development goals.

The competition, one of the most prestigious for chemical engineering majors in China, saw intense participation from 2,571 teams across 456 universities this year.

Over seven months, the ECUST team developed an innovative design featuring breakthroughs in reactor structure and separation technology. Their work was guided by a dedicated team of faculty advisors from the School of Chemical Engineering.
